He says he was not expecting 2016

to be his year. “To become national champion was a total surprise, I typically don’t do well in events like this, I always knew I had the tricks there - but stringing them together consistently on the day has not been my speciality.” “My main motivation on the weekend was riding good for my friend Brad Smeele, who was left quadriplegic after a wakeboarding crash in 2014. “His attitude is straight up inspirational, and I just realised that I don’t have any excuses at all to not do well.”

“Having him on the shore getting behind me was so awesome. “It felt immense to raise that cup up for him.” David trains on the Wairau River once or twice a week during summer. He has coached and trained in Florida in three month stints, but the past few years had seen life and a career become more of a priority. “I have a great job that I love, and purchased a house with my younger brother a couple of years ago which we are slowly doing up, so wake boarding hasn’t been such a big priority recently.”

He won the junior men’s national title in 2007. “It’s funny how things come full circle, I’ve literally been riding in open mens now for ten years on and off, to not even get a podium in that time has left me feeling a bit deflated and frustrated with competingwhich was part of the reason I was on the fence about doing it this year. “It felt unreal to put together such a good pass two days in a row, I still can’t describe how good that felt.” David says he will compete in Christchurch this weekend and hoped to return to America in the future to train and continue to teach.

Sunshine Rai Valley gets hours still up cellphone coverage By Cathie Bell Blenheim is still leading the list of New Zealand’s sunniest towns so far this year. Data collected from the weather station at the Grovetown Business Park by Plant & Food Research scientist Rob Agnew shows that 241.9 hours of sunshine were recorded for March, 105 per cent of the long term average for March. By Rob’s calculations, that puts Blenheim in first place for the first three months of the year, with 752.7 hours of sunshine, with Nelson in second place with 727.3 hours, then Tekapo and Whakatane. Last month had more recorded rainfall than usual for March, but 96 per cent of it fell on one day – 45mm on March 23. “The fact that virtually all March’s rainfall fell on one day meant that the rest of the month was very dry and still had a high fire risk. Had this rain been spread out during the month it would have lessened the fire risk to some extent.” Rob says that although Marlborough is still very dry at the beginning of April this year, the January to March rainfall total is the highest since 2005, that is, the highest in 11 years.

The newly-built cell site, which was turned on last week, provides mobile coverage and highspeed rural wireless broadband to the area for the first time. Vodafone’s Technology Director, Tony Baird, says connectivity and access to high-speed broadband has become a critical tool for Kiwis in rural areas. “We’re continually investing so our rural customers gain access to the same benefits as those living in urban areas, and have done so since the Rural Broadband Initiative began. Tyler battles rare tumour

By Celeste Alexander Local couple Phil and Trina Walker are facing one of the scariest situations imaginable. Their beloved four year old son Tyler was diagnosed with a rare aggressive brain tumour on March 3. The whole family has travelled to Christchurch where Tyler has received his first round of chemotherapy. Despite already undergoing surgery to drain fluids from his brain and relieve the pressure, and a second surgery to insert a duct where doctors will apply the treatment for the tumour, he remains cheerful. According to a family member, there’s still a tough road ahead of the couple who also have one-anda-half year old Jayden. Together they are staying at the Ronald McDonald House for a week until his second round of chemotherapy. “Tyler has started a tough treatment which is a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and it has a 45 per cent chance of success. “This is what the family and friends are relying on and is our biggest hope - we know how hard he can fight and we know how kind his heart is so his journey towards recovery will be long and hard but we are convinced together we can

make it. “During the nearly 25 days Tyler has spent in hospital, he has already touched the hearts of so many with his kindness and warm nature. “Tyler is the bubbliest, friendliest, most outgoing and caring boy and we want to help Tyler live the long and happy life he deserves.” Because Phil and Trina wish to stand by their son’s side at the hospital throughout the next six months of treatment, they will not be able to work during this time. “They want to fully support their boy with the massive battle he is facing at such a young age. “As Trina and Phil are absurdly busy and absorbed with the caring of Tyler, we are organising this page to collect individual donations to help and support this amazing young family,” the family member says. “Trina and Phil will not be able to work during Tyler’s treatment and funds are running low. “Besides the amazing support the family is getting from the doctors and nurses involved in the treatment, bills keep adding up and for that we kindly ask for your support to help the family stay together while they are in Christchurch, away from there home town Blenheim during this extremely hard time.

Plane crashes A small plane crashed at Marlborough airport on Monday night, the two people onboard suffered minor injuries. Marlborough Airport chief executive Dean Heiford confirmed a privatelyowned Cessna 152 landing towards the Renwick end of the runway landed short by 150m around 6.50pm on Monday. There were two people on board, and there was a full emergency services turnout. The plane was left on site overnight as it was too dark and risky to move. He says airport operations were unaffected.

Students share stories with elderly Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Springlands School students brought smiles to the faces of residents at Ashwood Park Retirement Village yesterday, during a special storytelling event organised by Countdown. As part of Countdown’s new storytelling themed collectible ‘Disney Movie Stars’ promotion, the students were invited to engage with village residents with some storytelling. Katrina Fahey (Katrina the Storyteller) kicked things off by giving some animated readings before students spent time with residents sharing their favourite Disney stories. Ashwood Park lead diversional therapist Angelea Stanton was thrilled with the event and says it’s wonderful to have the community engaging with residents. “It’s really important that we have community integration as it keeps our residents socially active. The students and residents have really enjoyed their time together,” she says. The collectible packs are given away for free with every $20 spent in Countdown and the cards, are designed to be used in a projector, also available at the supermarket.

Tails wagging, people smiling Story and photo by Celeste Alexander There were plenty of cuddles and pats going around at the SPCA Marlborough Centre’s Open Day on Sunday. The day not only managed to raise funds vital to the centre’s day-to-day operation, but also created an awareness of the work that’s carried out. The public had the chance to get up close and personal with the many cats and dogs waiting to be adopted, as well as enjoying the stalls and entertainment available. Children painted rocks, went apple bobbing and threw wet sponges at each other before finishing their visit with an ice cream and sausage sizzle.

Manager Kaycee Polkinghorne was pleased with the success of the day and says thanks to the generosity of local businesses. There were plenty of great prizes that were given away. “I would also like to say thank you to our volunteers who were amazing with organising the day, we could not do it without the wonderful Marlborough community support,” she says. Matthew McNeilly, originally from Blenheim, moved to Australia to further his career in the country music industry. He met his now wife Amelia Richards in Tamworth and they are now the country music duo known as NeillyRich. Last month, the duo were presented with the “International Frank Ifield Spur Award” by Frank Ifield himself, Matthew says, at Bob Howes Canterbury Country Show in New South Wales. Frank was the first Australian artist ever to sell over one million records in England and he was the first British-based artist to reach No.1 three times in Britain in 1962.

The only other person to have done so at that point was Elvis Presley. Matthew says part of the award is that he promotes a single in Europe and Britain. NeillyRich’s single “Sure Feels Good To Me” debuted on the charts over there at No.10 and has since leaped up to No.3,” Matthew says. “This is Hot Disc Top 40 which is the country music chart for all of Europe and England and is being played on television as well as radio,” he says. “Recently we have also done support acts for Darryl Braithwaite from Sherbet and are currently on tour with Australian Country Icon Kirsty Lee Akers. “We have also been invited to Nashville to perform at the Americana festival later this year.”

Common sense Dear Ed, I find it very disappointing seeing the lack of slow lanes for trucks on the Hunderlee Hill area south of Kaikoura. Truck drivers shouldn’t have to put up with cars piling up behind them while they try and drive slowly up the hills. When is the Government or the Kaikoura District Council going to put five slow lanes both ways to help trucks and cars out? If more slow lanes can’t be put in, then a tunnel under the Hunderlees from the start to finish would be a major help for everyone. Why should truck drivers have to put up with driving up over the hill so they can slow everyone down and create people like me and others to be frustrated and pass in a dangerous manner. It’s completely stupid. Show some common sense please.

Good Friday service Dear Ed, I had the privilege of being one of the people in the packed house at the Club, during the very special combined Good Friday service covering the crucifixion. Thank you so very very much combined organisers for your very indepth compilation and presentation. It was indeed the very best comprehensive coverage I’ve witnessed in my lifetime, which will be vividly remembered. The grand hymns selected that everyone knew, the appropriate scripture selections, and the bold screen presentation, all were perfect, plus guided excellently by the key speaker. What fascinated me was the number of actors of speciality parts and their special interpretations relating to the dramatic events as they unfolded step by step. That and all expressions grabbed the crowd and where they were able to take part in reading and singing, it stirred the soul to its depths of feeling and also devotion. Will and Rose Parsons of Driftwood Retreat and Eco-tours won the Marlborough Lines Adding Value to Marlborough award at this year’s business excellence awards. Cathie Bell talks to the couple about what was behind that win. It’s the special features of Marlborough that get Will and Rose Parsons going and it’s from that passionate love of the place, its geology, fauna, and flora that Will and Rose have built their business. It started 12 years ago, in 2004, when Will purchased some kayaks and the couple were using them on the water near their home. “We were paddling around, it was a gorgeous evening, a beautiful Marlborough evening. “We said, wow, there is so much to share here, there is no-one else around and people are missing out. That’s where we started.” Having a business mentor has been important for them. They started off floating the idea past Jeremy Jones, who owned Lake Timara Lodge, and he encouraged them to use the buzzword “eco-tourism”. “It might be now, it wasn’t really back then.” Jeremy worked with the couple to write a business plan to set out where the business would go. Will and Rose’s business plan was one of the things the judges in the business awards commented on – it’s a 100-year plan. Rose says that’s not rare in conservationbased businesses. “We’re thinking about the generations to come.”

The business built up organically. It started with van tours as they drove people to look at things on the land, then they moved into kayaking, and now, they are looking at trips to places further afield such as D’Urville Island. A key feature of the kayaking is their dog Vix accompanying them out on the water. It started with an earlier dog, Tommy, refusing to stay on the shore and insisting on swimming after them. “We were well down the river and there were these fisherman hollering at us. Eventually we turned around and saw the dog and had to pick him up.” Many clients are nervous about kayaking and can’t work out their centre of gravity, Will says. Having a dog sitting on top seems to make everything change, he says. “It relaxes people – she’s an important part of the kayaking tour now.” Providing accommodation grew like that too. Rose says people would go on the tours and not particularly want to go home. “They would hang around and talk… it would be dark, and we’d have moteliers ringing up asking if we had their clients.” Will says many clients have never seen real darkness. They are from cities and haven’t

seen the stars as they are in Marlborough. For others, it’s just the feeling of isolation here that attracts them. “We had one client, she just wanted to be left by the side of the river with a bottle of wine and enjoy the incredible scenery and isolation.” The couple’s involvement in community activities such as FLOW (Friends of the Lower Opawa and Wairau) and encouraging other wetlands and conservation projects developed from their own business. Will says the most exciting thing for him was sighting fernbirds on the property. “The Department of Conservation said they were probably the only fernbirds between here and Oamaru.” That fired an enthusiasm for not only providing good habitat but boosting pest control programmes too, Rose says. “That’s when we stepped up our predator control work. We realised we had something special here and needed to create an environment to protect them.” A lot of their business is sharing Marlborough with other people, they say. Will’s eyes light up as he talks about the fantastic features in Marlborough that many don’t know about and even fewer visit.

“I asked people at the awards dinner to put up their hands if they’d been to the Wairau Bar, where New Zealand’s first settlement was…not many people in that room had been out there.” His farming background, the relationships he’s built up with landowners, scientists, and others have increased his knowledge about Marlborough’s flora, fauna and geology. It means Will can show people things such as the many fault lines in the district, or the KT boundary on a farm near Kekerengu – one of two places in the world where the geological boundary layer that marks the end of the Cretaceous epoch and the extinction of the dinosaurs along with about half of all other creatures that lived back then, can be seen. The geology of the district is something he’s passionate about, so much so, he thinks Mt Tapuae-o-Uenuku should be the regional symbol. “You can see it almost everywhere. Captain Cook called it Mt Looker – it was always looking over everything he did. “The Marlborough Sounds is a gem, but there is more to Marlborough than wine and the Sounds. “It’s a much greater place.”

The garden is a wildflower garden, Jeanine says, but with a mix of seeds and plants, and significant elements of the garden include plants which Verve grows commercially. “I’m not sure how long that little park will remain vacant, but we are certainly setting it up so that the wildflowers are growing to self-seed, and are established for years to come.” Plants are going in to a “hybrid” approach, she says. Some are planted, but others will grow from seeds being sown. The seeds are from flowers grown on the Verve flower farm. It’ll be a steady and staggered approach, involving both seed sowing and planting in three bursts, with ongoing but easy-going maintenance in between, - now in autumn, late winter-early spring and again

Cups king Tijuana Bromac By Les Whiteside This time last year Fairhall harness trainer AnneMarie Best considered if it was worth persevering with Tijuana Bromac as a race horse. “His immune system was right down and I thought seriously about retiring him. “I never thought he would bounce back, but with the help of local vet Dave Sims we have been able to get him back to his former self,” says Anne-Marie. A lot can change in a year and Tijuana Bromac is now the 2016 North Island Country Cups champion. Tijuana Bromac followed up his Egmont and Taranaki Cup wins on both days of the Hawera meeting last week with a half-head victory beating Major Star and favourite Beyond The Silence. It was a huge effort

considering the 7-yearold gelding was the only 40m back-marker in the 12-horse 2600m stand. “I was overwhelmed but not surprised. That was a big run and David (Butcher) drove him really well.” Before these last three wins he hadn’t won a race since January last year. Maybe Tijuana Bromac’s form reversal could be attributed to Jeremy Best, as it has been Jeremy who has looked after Tijuana Bromac while racing in the North Island. “Jeremy was only going away for the four days but it ended up being 18 days touring around the central North Island,” says AnneMarie. “It has been a thrill to win all these cups. “I have always believed ‘everyone gets a turn in racing’.

“Tijuana Bromac will now be spelled for the next six weeks and then we will bring him back slowly for the winter racing.

There are some nice races for him around the Central North Island and there is always the NZ Trotting Cup in November,” says Anne-Marie.

Blenheim Racing Pigeon Club held their third race of the season from Mt Lyford on Sunday. Weather conditions were far from ideal, with overcast and low cloud here in Blenheim. However the flock was released in near perfect conditions at 9.50 am and quickly cleared the liberation point and headed for home. The winning birds were recorded by Alister Cooper at Renwick with a speed of 69 km/hr, second place to the Two Fishers partnership with another good fly on 67 km/hr, then Chris Bensley close behind for third on 66 km/hr. F ourth place to Shirley Morrison of Spring Creek her bird doing 65 km/ hr, then the Nearo loft in the Awatere Valley with Neil’s bird on 60 km/hr closely followed by Rob’s bird at 59 km/hr. Carl Kirkwood was next with 48 km/hr and daughter Cindy on 33 km/hr.

Marching teams excel at Nationals Two Marching Marlborough teams did well at the recent New Zealand Marching Championships in Auckland, despite being new teams to their grades, their coaches say. Shontae All Stars performed in the U16 age division, qualifying in the Championship march for their display (free choice) routine and the Plate march (B grade) for their technical drill routine. Shontae are coached by Julia Allen and Natasha McCracken. Sorelle – Renwick performed in the senior grade division, qualifying for the plate march in both their technical drill and display routines. Sorelle are coached by Anita Ireland. Both teams were new to their age grades this season and had made huge progress throughout the 2015-16 season, their coaches say. Their seasons concluded with outstanding achievements in the final day of competition, with Shontae Allstars being placed 6th in the Championship Display and 5th in the Plate Technical drill. Sorelle – Renwick were placed 3rd in the Plate grade Display routine and 4th for their Technical drill routine in the Plate grade. Both teams are now having a well-earned break. Jason Christie from Blenheim was the fastest of the speed bunnies in Saturday Grape Ride, in a time of 2.24.31 for the 101km trip. Sharlotte Lucas from Hokitika was the fastest woman in a time of 2.45.26. More than 1600 cyclists turned out for this years annual event.
